Remedial Canadian Politics 101 for Jason Kenney

Came across this quote from our brand-spanking new Secretary of State for Multiculturalism (another sign of the impending apocalypse), Jason Kenney:

"It’s a great testament to [Khan] that, within a week of moving to government caucus, [he has] the Prime Minister and Canada’s First Lady, Ms. Harper, in [his] constituency," Kenney said. "This is a sign that Wajid is already getting things done."

If by getting stuff done you mean lying to Canadians and arranging pointless political photo-ops on the taxpayers' dime then yeah Jason, he's kicking ass and taking names.

But, what was that again that Jason said:

… and Canada’s First Lady, Ms. Harper…

Umm, who is the head of state in our system of government, Jason? If you answered Governor General Michaelle Jean, give yourself a gold star. (I guess I should really say the Queen, but Mme. Jean fills in for her round these parts). You see, the Parliament makes the laws…

Sorry Jason, but as much as you may wish it, Stephen Harper is not the President of Canada, Laureen isn't the First Lady, the Navy Band won't play Hail to the Chief when he enters the room and we don't have any M&Ms with the seal of the Prime Minister on them.

P.S. In the same MacLean's piece we see that Stock Day will be visiting Khan in his riding tomorrow. Maybe Stock can give Wajid some column writing tips

At the press conference, Wajid thanked the PM and First Lady, by calling her Lorraine.

First Lady, geesh.

Although not an official title, Canadian PM wives have often been referred to as First Lady. Aline Chretien hosted a "First Ladies" meeting on child poverty back in 1999. Sheila Martin was written up in the Star as being a demure behind the scenes first lady just after hubby Paul was elected Leader. You should familiarize yourself with a little thing I like to call Google before you make these nutty posts. Its just too easy to shoot this crap out of the air.Libs are desperate to change the channel when this is worth blogging about.

does that make Dion the Howdy Doody of the 21st century?

I think that's already Mulroney's nickname for Steve, you'll need to come up with something else.

I thought people liked the nutty?

But seriously, while Aline did host the meeting, the government didn't go around referring to her as the first lady all the time, nor did Aline have a first consort a la John Baird, as declan points out. It's yet another symptom of the CPC's aping of the Republican tactics.

Ex-NDip has a problem with facts doesn't he? Does this guy read?

Chretien has stated clearly that he is not pulling strings behind Dion, but he is available if Dion should call for any advice or has any questions and this is "NORMAL" practice.

Wherein, Mulroney arranged "everything" for Harper.

Yup the Liberals lost 2 but only one crossed the floor - the other one retired out of politics. Emerson doesn't count - he's a slime and messed up the softwood lumber file, but again, he's has an interest in it doesn't he.

Let's see now - the Conservatives had 3 cross the floor.

I heard John Baird was gay - perhaps that's why Harper isn't worried about him escorting her around.
