It's all about moving online these days, but print is still the flagship/brand to get the online eyes. Thanks to some market consolidation dead tree edition is doing alright.

And Cliff I agree, print isn't dying. There may be some further whittling down, and those that don't adapt will perish, but that's survival of the fittest. Print as a medium isn't going anywhere.Jeffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14971310821484459106noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19402125.post-21083572028846225602008-08-08T13:33:00.000-04:002008-08-08T13:33:00.000-04:00We aren't watching the deaths of all newspapers - ...We aren't watching the deaths of all newspapers - just one crappy one. The print journalism field is in serious trouble but there are papers holding on to and even growing their audiences.

When the Western Standard closed their doors there was similar 'Any independent media voice going under is a tragedy' moans. I found it unpersuasive then and still do.

Both the Standard and the National Pest were and are pushers of a kind of capitalist absolutism that demands that every human activity be subject to market forces. In the marketplace of ideas their toxic stew of rightwing politics and economics has now failed first at the Standard and at the Pest.

Live by market absolutism, die by market absolutism.Cliffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03487395482670731681noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19402125.post-77356929824650701732008-08-08T11:03:00.000-04:002008-08-08T11:03:00.000-04:00No man is an island,Entire of itself. Each is a pie...No man is an island,
Entire of itself.
Each is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manner of thine own
Or of thine friend's were.
Each man's death diminishes me,
For I am involved in mankind.
Therefore, send not to know
For whom the bell tolls,
It tolls for thee.

By the way, Jeff, How is Computer World doing? It held its own against the G&M's Report on Business, and on occasion it was the paper I picked up over the other papers from TO.

But when you get consumed by vanity, as first Mr. Black and now the Aspers have, you naturally carry it to its logical conclusion. The contrarian editorial stances of the NP were fine reads at first but it's gotten way past ridiculous, if that's the best they can do to stay alive. If the FP ends up going down along with its present parent it would be a huge loss -- even with all the online biz content out there.BlastFurnacehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02561725837264524099noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19402125.post-79949436329716681592008-08-07T16:05:00.000-04:002008-08-07T16:05:00.000-04:00I was going to post exactly the scenario you added...I was going to post exactly the scenario you added at the end. A slimmer, pricier, beefed up Financial Post only. One way or another expect that more than any other long term result aside from it folding completely, no matter if it stays in the Asper's hands or not.

They can always keep a token editorial page to continue portraying all Israeli settlers as peaceful saints and all Muslims as subhuman savages who want to make Jews wear yellow badges - seemingly their number one preoccupation for years.Cliffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03487395482670731681noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19402125.post-87298294287931782942008-08-07T14:53:00.000-04:002008-08-07T14:53:00.000-04:00It is hard to see a postive outcome to this.TO Sun...It is hard to see a postive outcome to this.

TO Sun's in pretty bad shape, in that their free paper is apparently cannibalizing their ad revenue, but at least that end of the business is working for them.bigcitylibhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05081538803991095825noreply@blogger.com
