Video: Paul Martin and Wendy Yuan

Yesterday, former Prime Minister Paul Martin attended a fundraising lunch for the Liberal candidate in Vancouver-Kingsway, Wendy Yuan. It was a great speech to a sold-out crowd hungry for politics and dim sum, and Paul delivered a stinging rebuke on the Conservative economic record and a hearty endorsement of Liberal leader Stephane Dion. Yuan is looking to reclaim the seat from Conservative floor-crosser David Emerson, and she looks to be well on her way.

It's good to know that the Liberals haven't tried to hide away all their right wingers, and Paul was one of the best.
Did you read the editorial of the Toronto Star today, something about tricking folks into voting liberal basically thinking they meant their promises.

You mean the Paul Martin that, as Prime Minister, reached an agreement with the provinces that re-invested $41 billion in heath care and fighting wait times, that brought First Nations and Premiers together to sign the Kelowna Accord that would have made a real difference for our Aboriginal communities, that ushered in recognition of same sex marriage, that reached child care accords with the provinces, that made fighting poverty and investing in Africa a priority?

Do you mean that Paul Martin?

Some right winger.

Just glancing at the riding results for the past few elections.

What an odd riding.

In 2000... 2nd 3rd and 4th all went to candidates with the last name "Wong". (and a 4th "Wong" in '97.

Also in '97.. 2 "Wong"s and 2 "Leung"s

Interesting last names like in '53 "Helps" and "Dent"

A Mulroney running for the Dippers in '74

Fun facts.

I hope Ms. Yaun does well. I do think that a tory winning here is a bit (ok alot) of a stretch, but I think it might be a tight 2 way race with the NDP given their polling numbers in BC.

I think Paul appeared to be more of a fiscal conservative when he was finance minister.

As PM tho. he had surpluses and everyone crying for a piece of the pie. He seemed to have trouble balancing his own and his parties priorities with those of the loud chattering lobbies. He seemed to drive himself nuts trying to be all things to all people and make everyone happy. In the end that spending on everything and people pleasing was a large part of his undoing as a PM (In my opinion).

It's like NdP claiming whole ownership for national universal health care. They never can concede that Liberals played a pretty important part of that, but at least Douglas wasn't a worm who brought down the gov't before it could happen.
Yeah jan, hold your head high next time you happen to see a First Nation person struggling for a decent living and clean water, single mother who can't afford child care, or David Suzuki. You've done them all proud.

Yea that one. The one who has his shipping lines fly under a foreign flag so he didn't have to pay all those nasty employer fees for hiring Canadian workers, during the early 90s recession, yes that one.

Considering that Martin had promised to call an election at the end of February, and the house recesses for all of December and half-way through January, Martin was going to get up and going 2 national programs in about 3 weeks. Now who is delusional???
Straight math - libs plus NDP < cons plus bloc = libs loss.
What side would you be on when Harper and the Bloc (who was biting on the bit to get rid of the corrupt libs) when THEY PULLED THE PLUG, because they were determined. Hmm, didn't think so.

At the end of the day, it was the Canadian public who had enough of liberals and their corruption and who just made promises and just didn't get around to keeping them.

I note this election you dusted off that redbook circa 1993 national pharmcare program. It was a huge voter getter in 93, can't hurt to try it again. Pssh, folks won't remember.

Meet Wendy Yuan: The Next David Emerson for Vancouver-Kingsway, another parachuted liberal candidate brought to you by Paul Martin (exPM), who brought you your last parachuted candidate David Emerson. Emerson who gave meaning to that old saying: liberal/tory same old story.

You should look into the residences of some of the BC NDP candidates Jan, and how some of the "star" NDPers were shopping around different Lower Mainland ridings, because you start throwing stones in your very fragile glass house. You do (moderately) better when you stick to actual issues.

I'm not too excited about Vancouver-Kingsway Liberal Wendy Yuan. Personally I like my democracy 'sans communism'. Check this press release. I don't see media rushing to pick it up either like it should.

Liberal Candidate Wendy Yuan’s View on Rights Abuses against Falun Gong in China Consistent with Chinese Communist Party Line

CIPFG Calls on Dion to Reject Yuan’s view, and to affirm
that party policy is to the contrary

Vancouver – At an all candidates debate organized by Chinese Radio AM 1320 in the Vancouver-Kingsway riding on October 4, 2008, Liberal Party candidate Wendy Yuan spoke of Liberal Party policy regarding the rights abuses against Falun Gong in China.

Ms. Yuan stated: "For Falun Gong, our policy is not to interfere in other countries’ internal affairs.” Aside from Ms. Yuan, all the other candidates spoke in favour of protecting the basic rights of Falun Gong practitioners.

Clive Ansley, chairman of the Coalition to Investigate the Persecution of Falun Gong (CIPFG), is demanding that Liberal Party Leader Stephane Dion disassociate the Liberal Party from Ms. Yuan’s indefensible position which in effect holds that the torture, genocide, and mass murder of Falun Gong practitioners for the purpose of harvesting their organs is an internal Chinese issue, and that Liberal Party policy is to turn a blind eye toward these atrocities.
“Human Rights are universal and non-partisan,” said Mr. Ansley.
“It was shocking to hear from Ms. Yuan that the Liberal policy toward genocide, torture, and murder for the theft of organs is to cooperate with the Chinese Communist Party’s cover-up of its crimes. Under International Law, Human Rights abuses and Crimes Against Humanity can never be considered the internal affairs of any sovereign state. No state is permitted, under International Law, to violate the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Convention Against Torture, or the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Crimes Against Humanity. It is imperative that Stephan Dion, in the light of Ms. Yuan’s troubling statement, make absolutely clear whether the Liberal Party stands on the side of International Law or on the side of the Chinese Communist Party — the most prolific perpetrator of Crimes Against Humanity in this era.”

We have written to Dion and still await his reply,” said Sue Zhang, Falun Dafa Association of Canada.
