A welcome mat with nice, comfy fur

Congratulations to Gary Doer, who is stepping down as leader of Manitoba's NDP and premier of the province after a distinguished career in provincial politics.

As Gary considers his future career prospects, I might remind him that over in the federal Liberal Party we already have two former NDP premiers, and a welcome mat with nice, comfy fur.

So, Gary, if you decide you don't want to gun for Jack Layton's job, you're always welcome over here in Liberal land. Bob and Ujjal will keep the light on for you...

I hope that his sudden retirement doesn't mean something is wrong (health, etc.).

Doer is more Liberal anyway - he's not like those other NDP'rs

That happens to all of them when they have to govern. Luckily Jack doesn't have this pesky potential.

Sad day for Manitoba. Re the snotty comments about NDP folk. Stay classy guys. If you are this arrogant out of power, I hope you stay in opposition for a long, long, time.

Doer was a successful NDP Premier.

The difference between Gary Doer on the one hand and Bobo Rae and Ujjal Dossanjh on the other (apart from the one having integrity and the other two having none) is that gary was an effective premier, whereas both Bobo and Ujjal were disasters.

Of the seventeen people who have served as CCF-NDP premiers, only two have been unmitigated political, fiscal and electoral basket cases. You're welcome to both of them.

Malcolm+ and Robert seem more bitter than usual this morning.

I'm just saying...

In reference to your earlier post about patronage....

Harper is set to appoint Doer as the next ambassador to the US. (reported by CJOB this morning)

I thought Doer was a NDP loyalist, not in the basket with the tory followers.

Well, I have to admit, you were right. Doer did decide to join you after all. He became a Tory.

It seems the only unsuccessful premiers are those that became Liberals, and they only became unsuccessful once they became Liberals. Amusing, that.

Malcom, so Glen Clark wasn't a disaster? You love Glen Clark? Because Ujjal only ended up wearing the unpopularity of the Clark government. Blaming Dosanjh for the anti-NDP backlash in that election is like blaming Kim Campbell for Brian Mulroney.

As for Bob Rae, he won, what, the only NDP majority in Ontario in history? Some failure. And you guys liked him fine until he decided to leave.
