(Video) Don Newman schools John Baird

On Thursday morning, Conservative transport minister John Baird joined CBC's Don Newman in the foyer of the House of Commons to deliver the Conservative talking points while everyone waited for Stephen Harper to come out of his meeting with the Governor-General.

Funny thing happened though. It seemed like Don had a little time to kill, so he decided to school this young whipper-snapper Baird and call him out on some of the ridiculous inconsistencies and factual inaccuracies he was spouting. Usually hosts tend to just let the lies slide, but Don seemed to decide not today, young fella.

The interview went on for over 10 minutes, and it was Live, otherwise I'm sure Baird would have ran for the exits. The video is a little long, but it's well worth the view to see a journalist standing-up for the truth for a change.

Thanks for this, BCer - I saw it live and was thoroughly enjoying Baird get his butt spanked . . . .

That's fantastic. I've got to get the one-on-one with Tony Clement up too. It went much the same. Don Newman was having none of the spin.

wonderful work, BCer!

Don Newman and some other CBC reporters have been the only one who has been seriously trying to correct the half-truths and lies coming from the Conservatives.

In the past I have been pretty harsh on the CBC (and I still think they could get tougher on ALL spin-meisters than they already do), but overall they have done much effort to un-spin their lies; bravo!

Where would Canada be without the CBC?

Keith Boag's comments at the end are worth noting: "I cannot remember a circumstance when so many members of the government including the PM say things that need to be corrected because they are not true"

Eric - so true concerning the CBC

This is video is making it's way around Facebook and I'm pleased to be one of the people who posted it up.

I think the truth actually hurts John Baird to speak.

With the Conservatives, it's the classic 'Do as I say, not as I do.'

They survived over a dozen confidence votes with only the Bloc's help. Doesn't that mean, using their own arguments, that there was some sort of backroom deal between the Conservatives and the Bloc?

Maybe Duceppe was receiving little brown bags of cash...

What a sad spectacle. Harper is not working in the interests of Canadians.

I remember thinking when Harper called the last election, claiming that Parliament was 'dysfunctional' that it was like a gangster complaining about the violent crime rate.

thanks for bringing these clips out. It's so much more effective when truth comes out this way - a journalist cornering a politician to expose the lies than having an opposition member point it out. Pretty hard not to see the lie here.

I love those last few likes by Boag also - on the amount of lying the CONs are doing and how it's a journalists responsibility to ge to the truth.

Excellent political ad don't you think? In his own words yet - way to go Mr. Baird and dictatorship in the making.

Essentially, Baird (and the CONs) are supporting the idea of mob rule. That the principle service of gov't is just to rubber-stamp their agenda, despite it lacking majority suport among the Canadian people, and that should the elected House not succumb, followed by the Governor-General, they are willing to subvert the responsibility of our parliamentary system for thuggery.
We had a local school conference on how to stop bullying; I'm not certain how those parents and teachers feel, knowing that there's essentially a higher institution in our land promoting the art.
