Saturday afternoon stats

While the Conservative attack machine likes to use out of context statements to misrepresent Liberals as big spenders, the facts don’t lie: it’s the Conservatives that are shoveling taxpayer dollars out of the back of a truck at unprecedented levels:

The numbers speak for themselves. And what’s more, despite massively ramping-up spending the Harper Conservatives are cutting back in the areas that are priorities to Canadians, and have made petty ideological cuts, such as to the Status of Women and the Court Challenges Program.

Hopefully by the time Jim Flaherty is done spending like a drunken sailor, and waging a campaign against the province that is the engine of the country’s economy, he won’t have left too big a mess for the next fiscally prudent Liberal government to clean-up.

Mr.Jedras It is amazing to me how you can mention these stats, but not to mention why. Let me do it for you Mr.Jedras if you do not mind.

First this government had to rebuild our military almost from scratch. We have this Afghan mission that is still going on.

Second this government had to fix the fiscal imbalance that the Liberal government caused. Or maybe you have forgotten about it . "Right"?

Third have not you forgotten that the cost of living goes up every single year. The dollar doesn't go as far today as it did just ten years ago. I am surprised you did not compare it to the 70's. I realize you are talking percentage here.

Besides saying the military, what else do you want the government to cut in spending? Need I remind you that this is a minority government and all budgets till date was approved by parliament.

Now to get to the Status of Women, what is wrong for this group to go out and do some found raising instead of waiting handout from the tax payers of this country? I will just give you one example here. Environmental groups they go out and raise money for their causes why can't the Statuses of Women do the same. The same thing for the court challenges program. There is an organization in the States that is totally founding by private individual not government in which it does the same thing that the court challenges program did. Sorry the name of the organization escapes me.

Please be honest here Jim Flaherty is not waging a campaign against Ontario. He is waging a campaign against the government of Ontario big difference here. If I would take your logic here every time that you criticize Pres.Bush you are actually criticizing the American people right?

Here is the name of the organization that does the same thing as court challenges program. It is called American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) just read and you will see how they get their $$$.

Really Right Where Its At?

Take a look:

Ottawa urged to curb its 'excessive' spending
But budget surplus $10B 10 months into fiscal year
By: Eric Beauchesne

Updated: March 29 at 12:10 AM CDT

OTTAWA -- The federal government was sitting on a $10-billion surplus 10 months into the current fiscal year, just $200 million shy of what Finance Minister Jim Flaherty last month projected for the full year.

The $10-billion surplus amounts to about $300 for each of Canada's 33,220,831 people.

The latest surplus, reported Friday by the Finance Department, was also just $600 million less than chalked up over the same period a year earlier, during which the government took in nearly $14 billion more than it spent.

The continuing strong growth in government spending was criticized by Adam Taylor, national research director with the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, who noted that Flaherty said he didn't cut taxes further in this year's budget because of the projected slowdown in the economy.

"Canadians won't tolerate being told to tighten their belts when the government won't tighten its belt," Taylor said.

AND...

Dale Orr, chief economist at Global Insight, called the growth in spending "grossly excessive," noting the Conservative government was committed to keeping its spending to within the nominal or non-inflation-adjusted growth in the economy, which was 5.7 per cent in 2007 and is projected to be just 3.5 per cent in 2008.

The "main problem" with that pace of spending growth is that it leaves the government with less room to cut taxes, Orr said.

....could cut and paste more on this, but I think this says it.

RuralSandi it's $600 million for the month of January. We have 12 months in a year. What program would you cut besides the Military rural? Stop the spin please. I will repeat it again. What programs would you like to see that the government should cut that would make a difference?

How about - double the amount of polling done by the CPC ($31 million) than any other political party.

How about eliminating the makeup lady.

How about eliminating taxpayers paying $650,000 on stickers for the photo-op GST cut.

How about less SUV's - double the amount spent than any prior government.

You're over emphasizing the military here - and it's not spin. It's an article from economic specialists.

Right Where it's...you are the spinner - big time.

PS: we are not the US, try to keep that in mind. Do we really want to be in the financial shape they are in? I don't think so. Not a good model at all.

Man, you Conservatives are just full of excuses for everything these days.

Face it, fiscal conservatism is a mirage when it comes to these characters. Seems to me Martin had some pressing, big ticket expenditures too.

Rural as I suspected no answers. All what you just said would not even add up to $50 million. Answer yourself this question. Why are Liberals letting the budget pass? If we collect $600 million a month that would give a total of $7.2billion surplus after 12 months not bad I would say.

Don't forget last spring $1 billion was predicted and we ended up with $10 billion.

I'd suggest that's not such a good thing. We bashed the Libs for "surprise" surpluses that let them spend, spend, spend their way to election wins. We should do better than them.

I love how they chat up each other on Liberal blogs:

Rat: I agree with you, TRIWIA.
TRIWIA: No, I agree with *you*, Rat.

Like watching snake-oil salesmen and their shills, except that no one has any idea what they're flogging.

Jeff,
You'd be hard-pressed to find a Tory that disagrees with you on this point. I think many Tory voters (myself included) were disappointed with Harper's big-spending style. We can only reassure ourselves with the line "well yeah, but they're in a minority situation. Just wait until they get a majority..."

The cuts to women's groups (I think) were restored. I recall reading that somewhere. Sorry, no link.
